At Cook Hearing and Balance, we always strive to give our patients the best care with the latest hearing healthcare technology. We are proud to announce that we are offering custom ear impressions with the use of the latest hearing test technology, the Otometrics Otoscan 3D ear scanner.
This innovative piece of technology is truly groundbreaking when it comes to testing and counseling. The Otoscan is able to provide deeper scans than traditional impression material and is more accurate in creating a custom mold. This is due to the fact that traditional impression material can expand and contract depending on the weather while being shipped. On top of offering a more accurate mold of the ear, it also takes away certain risks associated with traditional impression taking such as the possibility of what’s called a blow by. A blow by is when traditional impression material becomes attached to the eardrum during the process, and pulls or tears the eardrum upon removal.
The process of getting a 3D ear scan is quite simple and painless The entire scan is quite simple, painless, and convenient, typically being completed within 5 minutes. Throughout the scan, you will be able to see the inside of your ear canal and watch the scan being formed. Below are the steps that take place during this process so you know what to expect while receiving a 3D Otometrics scan:
One of our experienced audiologists will seat you and place the headset on you that encompasses the ear that is going to be scanned.
Next, our audiologist will place the probe right at the entrance of the ear to notify the scanner that she is about to begin.
Then, our audiologist will begin to move slowly into the ear canal while scanning the ear canal walls. This will continue until the scanner notifies her that she has reached a satisfactory level to create a full picture of your ear. She will know this is happening when a green ring appears on the computer screen and a small beep emits from the scanner.
Finally, our audiologist will slowly remove the scanner from the ear canal and continue to scan the outer ear to complete the ear mold scan.
Afterwards, our audiologists are able to save each scan into the Otocloud, which is the highly secured data storage center through the Otometrics company. All scans are able to be accessed and processed by manufacturers in the same day. The Otocloud database virtually eliminates the time needed for shipping with traditional ear impressions, thus allowing custom made earmolds to be created much faster.
The Otometrics Otoscan is part of the future of hearing technology, and we are glad to pass the benefits of this new technology on to our amazing patients.
